RadioRNR Artist The Dingleberries, Make Big Waves With New Release

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

After giving the dingleberries’ second album Ashore quite a few listens I knew I just had to get the word out to as many fans of outstanding musical accomplishment as I could. To me if a song can make you feel a number of emotions and take you on a magical journey of those feelings, then the writer of the words, the musicians who blend in the music and the vocalist or vocalists, who use their voices to bring those words to life have done a marvelous job. Of course the work of sound engineer Mike Petkau brought all of this together to create a fabulous disk. Bravo dingleberries you have used your talents as writers, musicians and singers to create a great piece of work on par with many of the most accomplished of bands.

Beginning with the title track, this versatile outfit who greatly enjoy bringing their music to everyone, be it hundreds in a large hall or just a handful of friends in a small venue, work through a dozen solid tracks totaling 48 minutes 30 seconds. The CD begins with the full length version of Ashore and ends with the radio edit of the same song. In between are a variety of superbly written and performed songs that are sure to give you an exhilaratingly emotional ride. Songs of the relationships with others that we all experience in our lives. Songs of extreme sadness of a love breakup and of losing someone so near and dear to us.

It only seems fitting to bracket the other 10 fabulous tunes with two versions of the title track penned by Robertson, MacLean and Bell. How about these for straight from the heart lyrics. ‘Staring out at the water, Like I’m waiting for my ship to come in, I’ve finally hit rock bottom, And I don’t know where to begin… I should be drowning in my sorrows, There are no hands there to pull me ashore, I don’t take help when I need it, Now I’ve never needed it more. Now she is gone and…the house is gone and…The life that I had with you is… Finally gone.’

It only makes sense that, with the band being made up of five unique individuals, actually six with Jane Moody on cello and background vocals, that they are as versatile as they are. Famous for their interpretations of numerous artists music at special shows like the Super Sixties Show coming up at the Kenmor Theatre in April, the band is unafraid to tackle a wide variety of songs. And they do just that here! Frank MacLean, guitar, lead, harmony and backup vocals and Scott Bell, keyboards, background vocals, accordion, percussion and clarinet co-founded the band in 1992. Moody joined in a year later.

Derek Robertson, lead, harmony and background vocals, guitar, harmonica, percussion; Jeff Korchoski, drums, harmony and background vocals, percussion and Larry Solinski on bass complete the lineup of the band. The CD also includes the valuable contribution of some talented guest musicians. Leanne Zacharias, cello; Paul Bergman, banjo, background vocals; Karl Redding, background vocals, guitar and Jon Guenter, viola, mandolin, background vocals.

Robertson handles lead vocals on most of the songs with MacLean doing wonderful lead vocal work on the others. A lot of easy listening rock, tinged with country rock and folk is found on this CD. Maclean wrote Who Should Cry Now?, Find That Highway, The tale of the Dead Horse Creek, Stay With Me, Halfway Tree and She Left Yesterday. He and Robertson collaborated on The Reason. Robertson wrote Believe in Me and co-wrote Window Eyes and Yesteryears with Elise Rea.

RadioRNR Artist: Jack Brag

Jack Brag’s take on pop music is a clear departure from what you’ll hear in the mainstream. By fusing orchestral cello, vaudeville piano, and catchy pop/rock hooks, Jack Brag delivers a sound that’s well beyond the expected. The phrase “energetic chamber pop” is a good way to describe the collaborative output, much of which owes itself to the orchestral-stringed undertones simmering throughout each song.

Jack Brag got its start in the summer of 2007, when primary songwriter/bassist Tony Donato partnered with vocalist/keyboardist Jim Robertazzi. Together, the pair quickly realized a shared fascination in musical theater-inspired aggressive pop/rock. Tony’s interest in 19th century idioms, expressions, and culture ultimately led him to label the project “Jack Brag,” a 19th century expression meaning “a pretender who ingratiates himself with people above him.”

But don’t make the mistake of thinking that Jack Brag is some kind of “intellectual exercise.” The band punches along with the ferocity and style you’d expect from such influences as The Who, The Pixies, Queen, REM, Talking Heads, and Husker Du.

After enlisting cellist Jay Varga, guitarist Rich Ferreira, and drummer Bill Quinn, the quintet put all of the elements together to arrive at a unique style of high-energy music that captures the dynamic of today’s pop music scene while subtly hinting at vaudeville and whimsy theatrics.

In the fall of 2008, Jack Brag completed its 13-song debut album, and as you might expect, it pulls out all the stops, blending elements of pop/rock, theater, and hints of chamber orchestration. In late 2008, Jack Brag recorded its interpretation of “Hyacinth Girl” for “A Few Uneven Rhymes, A Tribute to Winter Hours,” distributed by Main Man Records. Other contributors to this two-CD tribute included members of Nada Surf and former members of The Feelies, Violent Femmes, and The Cucumbers. In late 2009, Jack Brag contributed its rendition of “Fat Bottomed Girls” to “Horse Feathers & Animal Crackers – A Tribute To Queen,” on Main Man Records. Other contributors to this two-CD tribute included members from The Alice Cooper Group, New York Dolls

In early 2010, Jack Brag recorded its interpretations of “Praying Hands” and “Girls on Film” for upcoming Devo and Duran Duran tribute CDs slated for release on Main Man Records in 2010. The band also continues to write and record new songs for its sophomore release, which it plans to have ready for distribution by fall of 2010.

Jack Brag’s self-titled debut CD and “A Few Uneven Rhymes, A Tribute to Winter Hours” are available iTunes, CD Baby, and Amazon.com.

RadioRNR Artist: Band B

Monday, December 21st, 2009

bandB_profilepicThe inception of BandB came about with singer-songwriter Chris Breest’s ambition to make a record in late 2003.  Anxious to start production of his work, Breest turned to fellow studio engineer and future drummer of BandB, Matt Binder. The two collaborated and joined forces with various friends and musicians including bassist Brian Rizzardi, keyboard player Peter “Keys” Pisarczyk (George Clinton, Muzik Mafia, Jody Raffoul), and guitar guru Rob Nelson  to officially form BandB in April of 2004.

Shortly thereafter BandB began receiving press and accolades from playing high profile shows at venues including The Palace of Auburn Hills, and the 89x Homeboy radio show. Their fresh sound even landed them a gig halfway across the country at Monroe’s Bar in Hollywood, California, for Universal Pictures premiere of the music documentary “Dig”.

While in Hollywood, the band was offered a record contract on behalf of Universal Music Group, but decided to decline the proposal in order to pursue their self-regulated production approach. Upon setting up shop in an old church they had acquired, the band began tracking what would eventually become their debut album “Bent”.

Finally after three years of intensive studio collaboration with producer Jimmy Romeo, who has worked with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant, BandB birthed their first independent album, “Bent” in January of 2007. The nine song album is an infusion of grass roots Americana with a Brit-pop influence, ranging from high energy beats to acoustic ballads.

RadioRNR Artist: Adam Percy

Monday, December 21st, 2009

adampercy_profilepicWhat does one do upon graduating from business school after putting aside dreams of a life as a musician?  Of course, you become a teacher- and that’s exactly what Adam Percy did.

After graduating from the University of Michigan in 2007, Adam became an 8th grade math and science teacher serving the low-income communities of Phoenix, Arizona with Teach For America.  From this information, you would never guess that he has been a passionate musician since the age of two years old.

During his time as a teacher, Adam did a lot of soul searching in addition to shaping young minds and doing his part to close the nation’s achievement gap.  On the other side of his two-year stint, he emerged much stronger as a person, and also as a musician; ready to take on the challenge of the music business.  As Adam says, “once you’ve been a teacher, nothing else seems very hard.  You gain an incredible perspective about living your life through witnessing such hardship on a daily basis.”

On August 15th, 2009, Adam moved back to the Midwest to Chicago to launch the pursuit of his lifetime.  Within a week he booked his first solo show at The Elbo Room, and has continued to gain much attention since then, successfully booking multiple appearances at Chicago venues such as Uncommon Ground (Jeff Buckley), Stanley’s (Eddie Vedder, Kid Rock), and multiple returns to The Elbo Room.  As 2010 looms on the horizon, Adam Percy is gaining the momentum he needs to make huge waves, not only in the music scene of Chicago, but all across the country.

RadioRNR: Atomic Flea

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

atomic-flea-150x150Minneapolis-based Atomic Flea is a 4-piece original acoustic group (2 guitars, acoustic bass, violin) featuring material spanning 12 yrs of songwriting with influences from the Beatles to Low to Matt Pond PA. For most of its history (formed in 1996) Atomic Flea was an electric pop-rock group, releasing three albums. The acoustic repertoire includes many new arrangements from the electric era, focused heavily on the band’s latest electric release, BABADEBABA (2008.) The music from that record was trending towards a more acoustic sound, so the transition has been a very natural and exciting one.

The release of BABADEBABA was also accompanied by a short graphic novel inspired by the album’s title track. This and more are all available for perusal and purchase at the band’s web site, atomicflea.com.

Monday, April 20th, 2009

laurie_larson_2009Laurie Larson’s third CD is in the Grammy nomination process & continues to build upon superb songwriting and musicianship. Unlike most albums with only one or two good tracks, each song on this CD can stand on its own. It sounds like a greatest hits CD, but all songs were written by Laurie Larson in the last few months, with the exception of “Artist’s Mirage Two” – a rearrangement of the title track to her first album she wrote in (2001), and one of the counter melodies in “True to Nature” she wrote in (1984). The title track will be featured in Relix Magazine’s CD sampler in November! “1 Realm” is featured in Global Rhythm’s Sampler & the Acoustic Rainbow sampler. “A Call to Action” can also be found on Global Rhythm Magazine’s CD Sampler.

She has been on stage with members of Jefferson Airplane, Mick Fleetwood’s Zoo and members of Country Joe and the Fish.  She has won awards for her bass playing in several jazz contests.

Amy Winehouse Cancels Coachella Gig Due to Legal Issues

Monday, March 9th, 2009

amywinehouseAfter Amy Winehouse was charged last week with assault in London, in connection with an incident that occurred in September, she will reportedly not be able to get a U.S. visa in time for her April 19 headlining gig at the Coachella festival.

Because of her legal problems, The Associated Press reported that it will be hard for Winehouse to obtain a visa. And although her rep, Chris Goodman, hasn’t commented specifically on the visa, in a statement to People, he said, “She cannot go because of current legal issues.”

People further reports that the singer had been in the process of getting a work visa to play at the festival, but hadn’t yet finished it. Her rep added that her “legal case would not be sorted out in time for her to make the music fest.”

Winehouse is still expected to be a part of the festivities surrounding the 50th birthday celebration of her British record label, Island, on May 31. Before that, though, Winehouse is due back in court on March 17 to deal with the charges that stem from claims made by Sherene Flash in a tabloid who said she was hit in the eye by Winehouse after asking to take a picture with the Grammy-winning “Rehab” singer at the September 26 concert.

Winehouse, who has struggled with drug problems and health issues, has reportedly written some songs for a follow-up to her Grammy-winning breakthrough 2006 Back to Black album, but no release date for her third album has been announced. Due to her personal struggles, Winehouse was forced to pull out of a scheduled 2007 U.S. tour. Last year, Winehouse faced a similar problem when she was prevented from attending the Grammy Awards.

Hendrix Drummer Mitch Mitchell Passes Away

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Just after completing a tour with the Experience Hendrix project, legendary drummer Mitch Mitchell passed away in Portland, OR, apparently from natural causes. Mitchell, 62, was found dead on Wednesday in a Portland hotel room. He was spending some time in the city before returning to his native England, having just finished the Experience Hendrix tour in Portland on November 7.

“We’re all devastated to hear of Mitch’s passing,” said Experience Hendrix CEO Janie Hendrix (Jimi’s sister) in a statement. “He was a wonderful man, a brilliant musician and a true friend. His role in shaping the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cannot be underestimated. Over the course of the recent tour, he seemed delighted with the interchange with the other musicians and the audiences. There is no question that he was doing what he loved.”

Mitchell rose to fame when he and bassist Noel Redding rounded out the Jimi Hendrix Experience from 1966 until 1969. He drummed on all three Experience albums Are You Experienced?, Axis: Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland as well as playing legendary performances at the Isle of Wight and Woodstock festivals. Mitchell also played in the Dirty Mac with John Lennon and played some gigs with Jeff Beck, as well as doing session work.

Mitchell was the last surviving member of the original Jimi Hendrix Experience. He is survived by his mother, his wife, a daughter and two grandchildren.
