DSC_5215brownBrothers-in-law Kayle Greiman and Daniel Matlach never set out to become a band.  They had but one thing on their minds: escaping kitchen duties at family get-togethers.  The two found themselves retreating into the Matlach’s basement-a solid concrete oasis where a keyboard and an old drum set entertained the stow-aways.

This less than noble desire to evade domestic responsibilities eventually led to the formation of what they now call Bruder.  Appropriately named, the German word “Bruder” translates into the English word “brother.”

While sharing a family connection, these two come from entirely different musical backgrounds.  Matlach’s background is one of formal musical education.  The son of a high school band instructor, he was brought up fully submersed in the science of music theory.

He became invested in music heavily through his college years, going on to graduate with a degree in musical composition. Proficient as he was on numerous instruments, Daniel found himself gravitating towards the piano.  This affinity towards keys now plays an integral role as Daniel uses synthesizers to create the musical backbone of Bruder.
Greiman’s resume however, reads much differently.  There was very little formal education involved in his musical journey; he learned primarily by doing.

Although drums were his first instrument, Kayle earned his stripes as a musician playing bass and singing in a touring rock band for the better part of ten years. Hard work and determination gained his trio two indie record deals and enough van-miles to render a U.S. Atlas worthless.  Albeit a different journey, Greiman’s was one that gained him invaluable knowledge in touring, recording, and performance.

As Bruder, Greiman and Matlach find their musical alliance to be a perfect match. Greiman’s seasoned vocals and drumming are perfectly complimented by Matlach’s intricate synthesizer layers.

The two spend countless hours collaborating in Greiman’s home studio in Tulsa, Ok. creating their synth driven sounds.  “We work really hard at being positive about each other’s ideas and making sure that we have a healthy friendship,” says Kayle of his relationship with his bandmate.  “So many bands have major walls built up among themselves.  They are insecure about their role in the band and are ultimately unable to fully express themselves.  We believe nothing could be more detrimental to our creativity and ability to create.”

The friendship between the two and their diverse musical perspectives verify that Bruder has all the potential for an extremely bright future.

RadioRNR Artist: Boneyard

boneyard_profilepicBoneyard, On the voodoo highway……………. JJ Lang – vocals, guitar….. Doug Mac – bass, vocals….. Mick Lee – guitar, vocals….. Brian Donnelly – drums…… …The stranger kicked the dust off his boots and ordered up a whiskey.

His tall frame eclipsed the door, but nobody looked up… all eyes were fixed on the stage. Steam heat fogged the front window giving the neon a soft glow. Inside, bottles clinked, pool balls clacked and bodies writhed together in electric anticipation. There was a hush over the room. The lights went down and the hush got louder.

Four cats mounted the stage with no fanfare, plugged in and peeled out. The place immediately ignited. Boneyard began to play… The stranger’s story was unclear, as was everyone’s in the joint. But how they all got there was unimportant, serendipitous as it may have seemed. What mattered was that this moment in time in this joint du jour had an immediate soundtrack… a sonic backdrop of faded denim and leather full of metal power, blues passion and guitar-driven Southern pride.

And as cinematic as this seems, Boneyard — these nomads of the American soundscape— paint this picture nightly… With classic rebel swagger, they own the immediate world around them. They’re the dudes all the guys wanna be… they’re the dudes all the girls wanna do. It’s an all-around seduction. Few bands do this well, hell, few bands do this at all. This quartet simply does not fool around. Where bands will flush thousands of dollars in the studio trying to capture something that ain’t there, Boneyard recorded its “Voodoo Highway” CD in two days for 300 bucks.

You can’t pull that off unless you’re for real, Jack… Boneyard knows it’s not enough to simply play or hear this music. It has to be lived and felt. It has to be breathed in before it can be breathed out. You have to straddle it before you can ride. It’s gotta burn… Boneyard brings this rock n roll, this relentless reality to everyplace they play. Whether it’s a metropolis, the end of the road, or somewhere in between. You can see it in a wake of roof-less gin joints and broken hearts. Just ask the stranger… Better yet, you be that stranger…on the voodoo highway. — Frank De Blase September 17, 2009 Rochester, NY

RadioRNR Artist: Band B

Monday, December 21st, 2009

bandB_profilepicThe inception of BandB came about with singer-songwriter Chris Breest’s ambition to make a record in late 2003.  Anxious to start production of his work, Breest turned to fellow studio engineer and future drummer of BandB, Matt Binder. The two collaborated and joined forces with various friends and musicians including bassist Brian Rizzardi, keyboard player Peter “Keys” Pisarczyk (George Clinton, Muzik Mafia, Jody Raffoul), and guitar guru Rob Nelson  to officially form BandB in April of 2004.

Shortly thereafter BandB began receiving press and accolades from playing high profile shows at venues including The Palace of Auburn Hills, and the 89x Homeboy radio show. Their fresh sound even landed them a gig halfway across the country at Monroe’s Bar in Hollywood, California, for Universal Pictures premiere of the music documentary “Dig”.

While in Hollywood, the band was offered a record contract on behalf of Universal Music Group, but decided to decline the proposal in order to pursue their self-regulated production approach. Upon setting up shop in an old church they had acquired, the band began tracking what would eventually become their debut album “Bent”.

Finally after three years of intensive studio collaboration with producer Jimmy Romeo, who has worked with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant, BandB birthed their first independent album, “Bent” in January of 2007. The nine song album is an infusion of grass roots Americana with a Brit-pop influence, ranging from high energy beats to acoustic ballads.

RadioRNR Artist: Adam Percy

Monday, December 21st, 2009

adampercy_profilepicWhat does one do upon graduating from business school after putting aside dreams of a life as a musician?  Of course, you become a teacher- and that’s exactly what Adam Percy did.

After graduating from the University of Michigan in 2007, Adam became an 8th grade math and science teacher serving the low-income communities of Phoenix, Arizona with Teach For America.  From this information, you would never guess that he has been a passionate musician since the age of two years old.

During his time as a teacher, Adam did a lot of soul searching in addition to shaping young minds and doing his part to close the nation’s achievement gap.  On the other side of his two-year stint, he emerged much stronger as a person, and also as a musician; ready to take on the challenge of the music business.  As Adam says, “once you’ve been a teacher, nothing else seems very hard.  You gain an incredible perspective about living your life through witnessing such hardship on a daily basis.”

On August 15th, 2009, Adam moved back to the Midwest to Chicago to launch the pursuit of his lifetime.  Within a week he booked his first solo show at The Elbo Room, and has continued to gain much attention since then, successfully booking multiple appearances at Chicago venues such as Uncommon Ground (Jeff Buckley), Stanley’s (Eddie Vedder, Kid Rock), and multiple returns to The Elbo Room.  As 2010 looms on the horizon, Adam Percy is gaining the momentum he needs to make huge waves, not only in the music scene of Chicago, but all across the country.

RadioRNR Artist: Bearin’ Peace

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Bearin’ Peace is straight out of North Jersey and is quickly building a name for themselves by blending together a clever mix of reggae, roots, and rock n’ roll music. With the current music scene slowly dying from an over saturation of emo, pop, punk, and one hit wonder bands; it is hard for many musicians to break the mold.

Bearin’ Peace does not take what is on MTV and remake it; they re-work the way music is thought of from the ground up. They can open a set by rocking the crowd with ‘Drop Out’, and just as quickly have everyone taping their feet to ‘Graveyard Swing’ without ever losing that soul and North Jersey vibe that all of their work embraces.

Growing up in Bergenfield, New Jersey has no doubt helped to further enhance their style. Bearin’ Peace encompasses all of the soul of the East Side. Members Bear Restifo, Pete Stolba, and Nick Paull all reside in Bergenfield; and each member brings forth their own personal style of play and musical taste into the mix.

With classic lead guitar riffs laid down by Pete, funky and smooth bass lines put down by Nick, and smooth reggae vocals and guitar rhythms arranged by Bear; much is brought together to form their unique sound. Not to mention J.5’s hard hitting drum style which also adds to the authenticity of the group.

There are not many shows you can go to and groove to a smooth reggae tune, dance to a swing song, and rock yourself content all in one set, yet Bearin’ Peace never manages to disappoint.

Instrumentation
Bear Restifo (Vocals and Guitar)
Pete Stolba (Lead Guitar)

RadioRNR Artist: Bosh

Friday, April 17th, 2009

wall-of-guitars“Access granted” is the theme of Lenny Bosh’s freshman CD, ‘Thoughts I Collected.’ But don’t be fooled by the independent label, because the production on this first-time-out CD is top shelf. The CD was written and recorded at Lenny’s woodland oasis in Coventry, CT – Sound of Fury Studios.

Produced by Mike Woods of Damone and mastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound, there is no denying the tracks are very gentle on the ears, while the use of densely layered vocal harmonies and vibrant acoustic guitars create a lush tapestry of sound. Lenny’s voice embodies the chipped away sound with no frills, pure content, and laden with emotion. Don’t be fooled that this is light music either, because Woods helped to create a wall of sound to fill out the style.

Soon after, the idea for ‘Thoughts I Collected’ was born. “I always wanted to put out a CD. I have a 4 and 5 year old, and finally it was at the point where I could spend some time doing ‘my stuff.’ I built a brand new house in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by all trees and went to it…but soon I realized I wasn’t making headway. I’d get maybe an hour a day in, and that’s just not productive. Meanwhile I started doing a few bands in my studio when my friend Greg Dicrosta (who designed and set up my studio) brought his friend’s band, Damone, in to engineer and record a song for the Major League Soccer team, the New England Revolution. It was different and my wife was so worried. We were going to make them stay at a hotel (and as bands always go they had no money), but my wife is cool and she was like ‘you guys can stay here.’ Depending on how you look at it, they ended up doing a few more songs and finishing their last CD here (‘Roll the Dice’) – because my studio is cheap, top notch, and the environment rules. They eat for free and eat good, I have a great pool, lots of property with lots of toys, game room, sauna, gym, and 2 full guest rooms on the 2nd floor. It’s a place where they don’t have to let the outside pressures get to them. I ended up really becoming friends with Mike Woods their songwriter and guitarist. For the next year he just continued to impress me with his musical skills. He is so gifted.”  close-up

Inside ‘Thoughts I Collected,’ you will find electric guitars, vintage synthesizers, instrumental solos, and catchy verses, along with memorizing choruses that leave you looking deeper into your own soul. Furthermore, the content of the songs are an opening into the life of someone who is learning to grow. Songs like “Take These Dreams” and “Forever and a Day” explore the fears of a father learning from his children, while “I Miss You” talks about discovering your own mortality, and such tracks as “Outside Looking Inside” and “What if” explore weaknesses and fears and open up Lenny like a book – all the while maintaining a confidence in his emotions.

Lenny Bosh grew up in Central Connecticut, son of a manufacturing business owner. He picked up guitar at a late age and ‘Thoughts I Collected’ is proof that music has been in his soul the whole time. As fate would have it, he soon found himself at the helm of his father’s company, living the American dream by taking over the business his father had worked hard to create. Music would take a back seat to hard work during these years but still in the back of his mind, always recording emotions and thoughts to save for use in music and lyrics. The flame of music was re-ignited once Lenny had children and he was able to see life a little slower once again. And it was at this time that he put down all the thoughts he collected through the years down on paper to create this work.

“My main music side is really that singer/songwriter and acoustic guitar format. But I am not as authentic as guys like Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash. So it tends to the rock/pop genre I figure. If you take those four categories and mix them together – that’s me. I do know that my sound is a bit different (and not in a rhetorically cool original way) because of my voice and my ability to not have to fit my music somewhere. As an independent artist who makes his living elsewhere it allows me to just put out what I feel. Since I have my own high-end studio it allows me to really hone in on sounds that I want. I am a larger than life guy – as my wife always says, “When I married you, I never knew it would be a fantastic roller coaster ride.” I manage to get into a lot of different things and meet some really interesting people from Presidents and Governors to rock stars and extremely wealthy people. I am 6 foot 3 and have a booming voice so when I hit a room or interact – people take notice. I wish I were quiet and soft spoken sometimes but I can’t stop being me.”

As far as future plans, Bosh’s has certain goals in mind. “To pursue my music and watch my kids grow. I want to see where my music will go. My music dream is that of many if not most other artists – to connect to other people via my music. That I touch people with my music is the biggest compliment!”

RadioRNR Artist: Willie Ames

Friday, April 17th, 2009

willie-ames-artist-page-profile-photoFrom the depths of the ocean off the coast of sunny San Diego, California, USA, Planet Earth, Milky Way, the Universe and beyond, comes Willie Ames (guitarist/banjoist/singer/songwriter) born August 14, 1981. Willie first learned to play the guitar at the age of 5 with simple lessons from his father who taught him how to form basic chords. From then on, playing the guitar was a big hobby for Willie outside of school and sports. Self teaching himself songs by ear led the way for Willie to grab a solid grasp for playing songs on the guitar. At the age of 18, Willie became deeply inspired by the music of Mark Knopfler with Dire Straits and Lindsey Buckingham with Fleetwood Mac. While attending college, studying Mechanical Engineering, Willie had a calling for a music career.  Willie has written and continues to write his own original material that has listeners comparing his sound to his influences and other well known musicians.

Willie does not use a pick and, rather, uses the bare skin of his finger tips to finger pick. This allows for a more versatile sound and reveals more taste in his guitar playing technique. He also uses a bare hand strumming technique from time to time. Willie’s finger work can be heard in almost every music line he writes and is especially present in his instrumental track titled “Ice Breaker”. In his songs that include vocals, Willie is playing the guitar/banjo and singing at the same time. His track titled “Desert Run”, which happens to be the favorite according to his listeners, is a good example that proves his ability to finger pick his instrument and sing at the same time. His lyrics are written with influence of everyday experiences as well as fictional/artistic thoughts and ideas.

Willie plays a 6 string acoustic guitar, both metal string and nylon string. At age 23, Willie picked up a 5 string banjo. With his crisp and well developed finger work already established on the guitar, learning and self teaching himself the banjo came naturally. He began to write an instrumental tune titled “Black Widow” within 10 minutes of first picking up the banjo. As many banjo players play a bluegrass style of banjo, Willie digs deep to find a harder, darker, rock type of sound.  A 6 string electric guitar also gets worked into the cycle of instrument use.

Since the spring of 2004, Willie has been non stop, performing showcases at music venues and party functions with his original music all over the United States (48 states covered to date!!!). He has pursuit of reaching many other locations with his performances. Willie manages to distribute his CD to everyone in attendance at every performance. The CD consists of 16 original tracks with both his solo work and collaborations with other musicians. So far, Willie has released approximately 23,000 CDs to the public and he won’t be stopping anytime soon. His music is also available for digital download in iTunes music store and at many other websites of music distribution. Willie performs 100% live, both solo and with other musicians.

RadioRNR Artist: Split2nd Alibi

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

split2ndalibiHow do you define the sound of a band whose influences range from groundbreaking groups such as Rush, Stone Temple Pilots, and Rage Against the Machine to modern hard rock phenoms like Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, and Taproot?  Split 2nd Alibi has created a sound that can best be described as high-energy hard rock that irresistibly turns heads.  Formed in 2007 by members of two upstate New York bands, the buzz surrounding Split 2nd Alibi is unmistakable following the release of their first self-titled demo in August of 2007.

Already a mainstay in the clubs surrounding the Albany area, S2A is now poised to conquer bigger territories.  “These guys have a real hard rock edge combined with melodic vocals” proclaims producer Tim Lynch of The Recording Company, who works regularly with Jason Bittner of Shadows Fall (Atlantic Records) and members of the Trey Anastasio band.  The guys of S2A have already supported many notable artists including Godsmack, Sevendust, Alter Bridge, Nonpoint, 12 Stones, Boy Hits Car, Signal Home, and Speakerfire.

RadioRNR Artist: eat the weeds

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

eattheweedsEat the weeds is a project of Daniela Antlova, a recent immigrant from Central Europe trying to make sense of life in North America.

Apart from making music Daniela likes to pick berries, feel, crunch numbers and read Richard Dawkins’ books.

Daniela once poisoned herself with hemlock (Conium maculatum) while picking wild greens for lunch. Despite this episode she still thinks it is far more bizarre to buy a supermarket lettuce than to eat dandelion leaves from your backyard.
