Flaming Lips Prep to Rock “Dark Side” At Bonnaroo As Lineup Rumors Build

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

While the 2010 Bonnaroo lineup won’t be revealed until February 9th, the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne let slip in an interview with Spinner that his band will perform a midnight set at the Manchester, Tennessee fest that will feature a complete performance of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon. “As of yesterday, we’re gonna do it at Bonnaroo at the midnight slot, the first night,” Coyne said. “We do a Flaming Lips set then starting about 2:30 we do this Dark Side of the Moon thing. In that sense, it’s perfect for that. It lets you play a little bit longer.”

As Rolling Stone previously reported, the Lips last played their version of Dark Side during a New Year’s Eve concert in their native Oklahoma City. The gig was billed as the only time the Flaming Lips would play Pink Floyd’s classic 1973 LP live, but Coyne said that’s no longer the case. Coyne adds that the OKC performance was perhaps enhanced by the fact that the audience was tripping on acid, and that he expects similar crowd participation at Bonnaroo. “I don’t think it’ll be that much of a stretch to think Friday night at 2:30 in the morning at Bonnaroo would be that much different than being in Oklahoma City on New Year’s Eve. I’m sure people will be having their own party while we play this space rock or whatever,” Coyne told Spinner.

Other than the Lips, only the Dave Matthews Band — who left a conspicuous five-day long gap in their summer touring schedule during the time of the Bonnaroo festival — are all but confirmed for the 2010 Bonnaroo. However, Live Daily is reporting that Paul Simon will also headline 2010 Bonnaroo, and hint that Paul McCartney, who headlined at last year’s Coachella, might also perform. We’ll find out if Macca and Simon are among those flocking to Bonnaroo this year when the fest announces their full lineup at a “virtual event” next Tuesday.
