After more than a decade of a basically dry look-n-feel, incoming CD Baby owner Disc Makers is sprucing things up. The overhaul includes a bumped commission on download sales from cdbaby.com (not affiliates like Amazon), initially a big attention-getter. But this is about more than just rates – the overhaul spans interface, design, recommendation, and artist interaction.
The updates, first set live last weekend, include the introduction of artist pages, single-song downloads, and direct uploading of digital content by artists. “We basically flipped a big switch, and we anticipated that it would be bumpy for a few days,” Disc Makers president Tony van Veen told Digital Music News.
Surf around the new site, and things look a lot more inviting. Aside from an improved presentation, better recommendation and exploration aspects are now present. “We wanted to make it look like a real record store,” van Veen continued. “It didn’t have a welcoming feel where people could find and discover new stuff.”
